Have things got back to vaguely normal in your neighbourhood, CR? Or is your apartment block still uninhabitable?

This is China Mate, job done.

Gov gave everyone who needed one a new house built after setting up communes in the interim and Gov gave everyone money and workers who needed repairs.

Entire new towns and infrastructure are finished for those that fell. Beichuan (pron. Bay Twan) at the epicenter was completely rebuilt as a new city 20kms away from dirt to a city for 50,000 in 2 years and livable in 1.

They haven't touched the fallen Beichuan by the way and they are not going to, you can visit it and see it as it fell....

Beijing - Construction of the new Beichuan county seat, which was devastated by the deadly earthquake in May 2008, will be finished in October this year, Wu Jingping, Party secretary of Mianyang city, said at a news conference in Beijing on Thursday.

More than 10,000 houses are being built in the new seat of Beichuan, about 23 km from the original location, Wu said.

"These houses, ranging from 70 square meters to 120 sq m, are being built as affordable or low-rent housing, and will help about 35,000 people," the mayor said, adding that roads, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure are also under construction.

The old town of Beichuan will be open to the public at the two-year anniversary of the earthquake in May this year. Some quake relics are to be preserved as sites for education and as a memorial, Wu said.

About 20,000 people became homeless in Beichuan after the quake, when most of the households lost their farming land.

"Our next step is to ensure that each household will own a piece of farming land or forest land, so they will be capable of making a living for themselves," Wu said.

The country has invested 615 billion yuan ($90 billion) in the reconstruction of quake-hit Sichuan province.

A total of 21,944 projects, or 74 percent of the post-quake reconstruction program, have been completed in Sichuan. The province is striving to finish the three-year plan within two years, said Hou Xiongfei, chief of the Sichuan provincial government's information office.

Deyang, an important manufacturing base for industrial equipment, is taking the reconstruction as an opportunity to optimize economic structure with a focus on new energy industries, according to its mayor, Chen Xinyou.

The major enterprises, such as China National Erzhong Group Co and Dongfang Electric Corp, have expanded their business to the new energy industries.

"Currently, about 50 percent of the orders for nuclear power generating equipment are produced in Deyang, and the market share for wind power equipment has also been increased," Chen said.

Deyang was identified by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in September 2008 as an international pilot city for clean energy technology and new energy equipment manufacturing.

My home is in Deyang.

And 2 days ago, the 12th, was the 2nd anniversary - theres still about 20,000 people thought to be missing as many small villages just disappeared under mountain slides.

Oh, 2 days ago in a noodle restaraunt we were eating breakfast and some of the customers started complaining they thought the servings were smaller than usual, man you had to be there to see it when I let go at them.

80,000 dead so far, many missing, many, many homeless and some hill people still can't get food and these assholes sitting there complaining about their 15cent bowl of noodles.

You lose your sense of humour after a week of no/bad sleep.

As an ABC, I am deeply saddened and disturbed. But I cannot fathom how you must feel over there.

edit: Just looked at the date. The same still applies.

Holy craps, just went through a biggy, easily a 5.0+, scared the bejesus out of me, hope where ever the epicenter is everyone is ok

This one was strong enough to make the ground rumble albeit a lot shorter time, many have run out onto the street but seems to have only been the one, certainly gets the adrenalin going - it's after midnight and I was just about to go to bed now I'm all pumped up.

Hands are shaking, something no one should experience and I’m guessing this one related to the New Zealand Christchurch 5.9 quake 2 days ago.

Hang tight cheapo, not an amusing situation...glad one now lives in Yurp, having gone through a bunch of high 5s and sixes during my Nipponic sejourn. And damned glad had just moved out when the big one hit. Best Xmas wishes...er, might have to rephrase that...lesssee=

I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to my friends and colleagues, but it is difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone.
So I met with my lawyer yesterday, and on advice I wish to say the following:

"Please accept with no obligation , implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non addictive, gender neutral celebration of the solstice holiday practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious / secular persuasions and / or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

I also wish you a physically successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012 , but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that this country is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee."

[*]By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms :
"This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher."

Best Regards (without prejudice)

Well it's all going to end on December 21st 2012 according to them.

If you believe in that then sure, why not.

It is widely believed by the scientific community that there will be cosmic abnormalities when it all lines up but then these are the same guys who predict global warming so ....

Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time. - Lawrence Joseph.

Interesting that they can predict to the minute when it all lines up, just see what happened 26,000 years ago for reference (basically nothing).

I think it is dramatizing it too much to expect that things will happen on the one day (thanks Hollywood) and indeed if it was too have an effect I would expect many years either side of the event for things to be "happening".

So above so below.
I will just go out into my gaedens this Morning.
It is the 'bleak' mid Winter, so I will have to pick some apples and the roses that are blooming out there.

So. no worries for next year. :)
