Does anyone know what a desmodromic valve drive is, as fitted to the 1954-55 Mercedes W196.

It's a valve system that opens and closes the valve directly (rather than simply opening the valve and then relying on the valve spring to force the valve shut by pushing it against the cam lobe)
Desmodromic valve systems only require a very weak valve sping (to take up final clearance), but have higher reciprocating mass (often two rocker arms per valve.)
The system is still in use today in all Ducati motorcycles.
