I would think the teams get there aerodynamic engineers from the air craft industry? Check out the universities that teach aerodynamics.

Hopefully Manchester Uni :) I know Newey did Aeronautical Engineering at Southampton. Not sure about the rest.

The subject of people aiming to work in F1 was covered at length on another forum last year. To cut through the waffle the best way to find out what teams look for in employees is to ask them. The person who was trying to sort out university courses to end up in F1 wrote to and telephoned a few teams and they told him what they are looking for. Simple as that. Autosport will supply contact details if you can't find them anywhere else. Mike Gascoigne said in an F1 Racing interview last year that he will always make time to speak to people on this subject and I know of at least one person who contacted him and got a lot of good info.

Good Luck and remember people who work in F1 are just people and will treat you the same way you treat them.

So this is where Mr Aerodynamist hangs out!!
What type of engineering do u study anyway?
Aerodynamics is usually a post grad specialistion.Although it is covered as a subject in aeronautical engineering degree courses. You can also become involved in fluid dynamics post grad programmes by obtaining a degree in aeras such as Mechanical engineering and physics .
To become a top designer usually requires a phd and expierence in lower motorsport formulae or the aerospace industry.
I have also heard that Cranfield university in england has started a motorsport engineering course.
Jordan have a very interesting info sheet on all carrers in f1 ,write to them and check it out!

I think the thing to notice is that people like Newey and gascoyne started out with first class honour degrees in engineering, and did fluid dynamics (of which aerodynamics is a sub-division)in post graduate work. it would probably help if you also worked your vacations as a gopher at any race team, just to show them that you are keen.

I'm studying [apprently!] Aerospace Engineering [read Aeronautical] on a joint course between Manchester University and UMIST, in the UK. Currently I'm a 2nd year.

As for Cranfield, I know that they are a purely post-grad uni. My sisters there at the mo' doing a aerodynamicists master. I'll ask her.

Oh, and I actually hang out in the Paddock Club. 9 out of 10 of my posts are non-motorsport :)

If your in North America, get in touch wtih Gannasi, I know they have a program which takes people intrested in the field and teaches them all they need to know. I remember seeing some guy who was taken in who had no knowledge of how the stuff worked and now hes a member of the team.

I have a story I wrote on Willem Toet, at the time chief aerodynamicist for Ferrari.
It tells the full story of how he went from preparing a Holden Gemini touring car in Australia, all the way to the top.
It will give you some good clues, although there isn't any set path.
You just need the talent, the determination, a lot of hard work, and some luck.
I hope you like the story.

Barry, look up Mirabilis - ICQ is their chat club setup. You get a number when you join. Mine is 2097661, Justin's is 5649544. Whenever you go on line with your ICQ open you can see those you have registered as contacts who are on line at the same time.
ICQ - "I seek you."
