I think I see a Deutz Engine cooling fan back there so, Air-Cooled, it should.

The Burning Man story was done by Mark Amos, and I've never seen any of these vehicles in person or seen/heard them run. So to be perfectly honest, I have no idea.
I really like this VW, though. It reminds me of an old Road & Track cartoon (Stan Mott? Russell Brockbank?) in whch a VW Beetle appears on the road at the horizon, a tiny speck. As it approaches, it continues to grow in appearance until it finally arrives, and we learn it's as big as a house.
I like to think the cartoon inspired this vehicle. It's a long way to a punchline and you have to respect that.

The cartoon vehicle was a Cyclops- a Stan Mott creation.
