Yes, ReWind is right: apart from the different surname, Dr. Sellyei was from New Jersey (as a quick search shows), while Dr. Sell was from the other side of the continent. I trust that he has found the right one, as in period Dr. Sell's homwtown was usually given as Fullerton/CA, which is right across California State Route 91 from Anaheim cemetery, where Louis Felrath Sell is buried.

There was a period in the 1980s when the two were confused, somehow. Unfortunately, that caught me out on another forum about 10 years ago, but not here.

I guess seeing Dr. Lou Sell made some just drop the ending and assume they were one in the same, thanks to so many using aliases or shortened names.

One would have thought the difference between dentist and opthamologist would have been duly noted as well.

Louis Sellyei (1934 - 10 July 2015)

He could have been Lou Sell, winner of 1968 SCCA championship (?)

In addition to owning the Ferraris mentioned in the article above,  Dr Lou Sellyei also owned one of only three Eagle-Weslake F1 cars built during 1966-1967.

It appears he sold it (Chassis AAR-102) in 2013 for $3.7M,  just two years before he died.:

https://www.goodingc...ake-eagle-mk-1/

The AAR-102 chassis was the winner of the 1967 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, with Dan Gurney driving.  Bruce McLaren drove it later that season.

Note that the 1967 winner of the Belgian Grand Prix is AAR-104, a different chassis.

In my experience, Eagle-owning Doc Lou was a very pleasant gentleman...

The Belgian GP-winning Eagle chassis 104 is the Collier Collection's (Revs Institute) 'mag-ti' car with the magnesium/titanium structure.

It has appeared several times at the Goodwood Festival (more than once from unchecked memory).  The first time it ran there it was being checked out at the circuit just pre-FoS when rather embarrassingly the Collection engineer driving spun it (on cold tyres) leaving the chicane.

Just at that moment - wouldn't you know it? - a rather skinny and quite elderly gent astride a road-racing bike had just cycled into the pit lane in his full Lycra Tour de France kit.

He saw the end of the spin, then saw me.

"Whoa - Hello Doug".

"Goodness me, hello Len".

It was Len Terry, the designer of the Eagle who had just stopped by while on his daily ride just to see if anything might be running on circuit...

I was there as well that day Doug. I didn't see the spin, but got chatting to the 'mystery cyclist' whilst looking around the Eagle. Having never met him before, I didn't immediately recognise him, but was beginning to cotton on as the conversation went along. He was very keen to point out bits and pieces, and seemed to enjoy everyone else being so interested.

Finally someone else confirmed things for me by proffering their autograph book, and I managed to sneak a look over his shoulder !  I am not sure about it being his 'daily ride', as he told me he had come a considerable distance !

In today's Times death notices, there is an entry for the well-known Frazer Nash afficiando, Trevor Tarring, who passed on Saturday.

The online Times being pay walled, here is the announcement from the FN site itself...

There's a free obituary here - although it strangely claims he died on "Saturday April 30" (luckily we remember Saturday was April 29) and it leaves out his co-authorship of "Archie Frazer-Nash ...Engineer", the biography he finished after Mark Joseland's death.

How sad, at the age of just 57. A very precocious talent, George competed in his first WEC race at the age of just 18 at Kyalami and made his Le Mans debut the following year, 1984.

Le Mans veteran and Porsche enthusiast, Jean Egretaud passed away during the night between 27 and 28 April 2023, at age 86. Different sources show the spelling of his name as Egreteaud, don't know the correct form.

All French sources say Egretaud while British ones prefer Egreteaud. I would go with the former, guess they should now better

On 01 May 2023 passed away Luciano Trombotto, former Fiat Rally Team works driver, aged 87. Vice-champion in the Italian Rally Championship in 1972, he won twice the Rally Isola d'Elba, in 1971 and 1972 driving a Fiat 124 Sport Spider. Born in province of Turin, he nurtured two youngsters of the Agnelli family, Cristiano Rattazzi and Luca di Montezemolo, giving them numerous training lessons before they debuted in the 1000 Lakes Rally in 1968.

Surprised there hasn't been more response to this news on TNF. The man was a bit of a legend.

Those WMs were in their prime at Le Mans when I went there in 1981...

Wmlemans.jpg

...and it was a real pleasure to me to see them scorching down Mulsanne.

I did get a pic of the engine, which used the 604 cylinder block, in their pits but that's been thrown out.

WMchicane.jpg

I don't know what their budget was, but it was well-spent, and I can totally understand why Dorchy stayed with them.

That is the race record, but Price Cobb told me they hit 256 (412 km/hr) in the Walkinshaw Jag in a test session specifically created to do so — in I think 1989.

Sad news and it is something to think that much maligned engine will forever be a record holder at Le Mans (at least in the non-EV class ;) ).

Recently I learned that versatile mechanic Jerry Hanna aka O.J. Hanna passed away in December 2021 at age 82.
His obituary says this about his career in motor racing:

He enjoyed a long career working in various aspects and levels of racing, including Carroll Shelby Cobra Race team, John Mecom, Jr.'s Indy team and Jim Hall's Chaparral Racing Team. During this time he also raced his own car, the Corvette Grand Sport 001, which he purchased from Roger Penske.
Jerry also worked for McLaren Racing. This team won both the Can-Am Championship and the Indianapolis 500. With McLaren he was a member of the race crew and tested fabricators and engines. He also worked on the Formula 1 car.
In 1976 Jerry worked with the John Greenwood Corvette Team at LaMans, France in the 24 hour race.
Following LeMans, he went to Assemiestier Racing building and maintaining the cars as well as acting as crew chief.
In 1982 Jerry went to Kent Racing where he worked on the Toyota Project as team manager, doing logistics and scheduling. In 1984 the project was transferred to the AAR-Dan Gurney team and Jerry went with it. He was the team's crew chief and remained with Dan Gurney until 1986.
Moving to Cayucos, California in 1995, Jerry started Grand Sport Motors doing vintage car restoration and prototype work. Jerry belonged to VARA, the Vintage Automobile Racing Association, based in Los Angeles.

What puzzles me is "Assemiestier Racing". I think I never heard of an organization or a team by that name. Or is it just a mis-spelling and I am not smart enough to recognize what is meant by it?

Sad to see that legendary Mini racer Peter Baldwin has passed away. He was one the first drivers I recall being featured in Autosport back in 1973 and raced all manner of Minis as well as being an ace engine tuner. RIP Peter.

Roland Law, former long-time mechanic for Tyrrell and before that for John Coombs, has died. He was 97 and he died at the weekend. If I have more accurate birth and death details I will advise.

As reported by Wilson Fittipaldi on Instagram, his great friend Bird Clemente, Brazilian driver of the 1960's and 70's has passed away aged 85. He was very highly regarded in Brazil amongst many others by Emerson Fittipaldi but the possibility of a career in Europe came too late.

Nice tribute by Wilson's brother as well: "If today I am Emerson Fittipaldi, it is because Bird Clemente decided to drive cars and changed the trajectory of the sport in our country."

Sad to hear!  :( I may be one of the few people who have even heard of HH, but I still recall reading a feature about him in a race programme back in the days (when I was young enough to still commit everything to long term memory   ), he was the quintessential racer, trying his utmost to follow his desire to simply r-a-c-e, as an expression of life.

Just found an old print of the 1982 EFDA Euroseries Formula Ford 2000 point standings in a pile of papers that a few days ago nearly turned into a pile of carbage through water! H. Hagenbauer (first name and car unknown) started the season quite well, with 10 and 6 points from the two opening rounds at Zolder and Donington Park, suggesting 4th and 6th place finishes. No other points scored during the 9 round series and Hagenbauer finished 16th.
