Would you believe I did it on porpoise?
Well, actually not. They look kind of slippery to me, and besides, your laptop may get wet.

Just saw the film last night, and think that ANY film showing that much period footage is to be applauded.
The focus on Rindt and Cevert, both of whom were close to the Stewart family, is understandable; but not much mention of Courage.
Also found it illuminating to hear Stewart say that Rindt was the only competitor he really respected; this was presumably said in a 1970 interview - but still an odd inclusion. Clark, Hill, Surtees, Brabham, Amon, Ickx, Rodriguez, Fittipaldi, Peterson and of course Cevert; quite a long list to neglect.
Personally found it interesting to hear Ken Tyrrell saying "Williamson is dead. No celebration on the podium." in a very matter of fact way.
Different times.

He wasn't exactly a counter cultural figure , although some of his sartorial props might have given that impression to some . His friendship with George Harrison** was, I'd suggest ,borne out of their being neighbours in Switzerland rather than a shared interest in mysticism . I think that JYS , like most of his peers , then and now, was at least small 'c' conservative , if not big C . But I dare say that to the likes of the heroically uncool DSJ , JYS was a subversive hippy radical but behind the giant shades was a man who I'd wager was a stranger to the Grateful Dead (et al ) .
Probably a fair comment. One thing to remember is that JYS grew up in Dumbartonshire in the 1950s - that's a conservative place today but I can imagine back then that would be even more the case. I'm sure he enjoyed the swinging 60s and early 70s but his attitudes to a lot of things would have been formed a long time before then.
He was also - as a married father of two - not really in the target market for the pop music of the 60s or the hippie movement but its effects were felt beyond the immediate adopters of long hair, flowerey clothes etc.

The leading figures of 1960s culture weren't all from Chelsea in London or Greenwich Village, New York.
Eric Clapton came from a council estate in Ripley, Surrey, a place that still hasn't managed to enter the 21st century. Jimi Hendrix was from Seattle which was uncool in those days before coffee and computers were discovered. Twiggy came from Neasden and David Bailey from Leytonstone, both very down market London suburbs.
It wasn't about where you were raised. Almost everywhere was a conservative place back then (and most still are) so young people rebelled against it. That was rather the point.

I watched it last night and despite the occasional splicing together of random pieces of race footage and caption faux pas thoroughly enjoyed it. I hadn't previously seen footage of Piers Courage's fire. Not pleasant viewing.
JYS description of his efforts to hide inability to read and write was very interesting. He signed my brand new autograph book with "To Michael With Best Wishes Jackie Stewart" in January 67. In better handwriting than any other I subsequently obtained. Despite having been accosted by a 10 year old the second he arrived at the circuit he conveyed the impression that I was doing him an honour by allowing him to be the first to sign.

JYS may have been taken out of context, meaning that Rindt was his main competitor specifically in 1970.

I enjoyed the programme a lot. Mark Stewart has a very good style of filmaking (his previous film on Jackie had a great opening of him driving a Tyrrell at a deserted Paul Ricard to the opening bars of Shine On You Crazy Diamond - the music felt like a perfect fit against the visuals to me).
I was discussing the programme with my mums partner at the weekend, who told me first saw Jackie on track at the '69 International Trophy. He arrived at Woodcote to watch practice and couldn't stop himself involuntarily shouting out a prime cut of Anglo-Saxon as Jackie came past 'visibly faster than anyone else, right on the edge but smooth with it'. He noted that Jackie used the kerbs everywhere much more than anyone else on track - kerbs back then being closer to public road kerbs than race circuit kerbs, of course.

The YouTube link has been removed. Wonder if this will migrate to Netflix?
As far as JYS goes, I was born in '68 and can't remember a time when I didn't know who he was and instantly recognized him on TV. I've always admired him.

Watching a random filler piece on Sky F1 this weekend when I saw this picture of JYS and the College Footbal commentator Bill Fleming having a good hard listen to Jackie.
I wonder if any commentators these days would have such liberal access....yeah, no they wouldn't.
Still an interesting grab.
