My excuses for declaring Saturday's results faulty. There were actually two prelims for the big bangers and the one on Saturday was indeed Heuer-Hall-Sharp.

It was the second prelim, on Sunday morning, in which Hall had his contaminated fuel problems.

Sunday's four races at Midland, September 18, 1960:

Race 5: 10 laps

1. Harry Heuer [Scarab] BM1

2. Hap Sharp [Cooper Monaco/Maserati] DM1

3. Alex Budurin [Ferrari 250TR] DM2

4. Ronnie Hissom [Lister/Chevy] CM1

    Jim Hall [Maserati T61] DNF

Race 6: 20 laps

1. John Busley [OSCA] HM1

2. Ed Tucker [Elva Courier] FP1

3. Fred Chapman [Lotus 11] GM1

Race 7: 20 laps

1. Hap Sharp [Cooper/DKW] FJ1

2. Jim Hall [Lotus/Ford] FJ2

3. Steve Robinson [Volpini/Fiat] FJ3

4. Charlie Barns [Alfa Veloce] EP1

Race 8: 25 laps

1. Jim Hall [Maserati T61] DM1

2. Harry Heuer [Scarab] BM1

3. Ronnie Hissom [Lister/Chevy] CM1

4. Don Ives [Porsche RSK] FM1

5. Chuck Hall [Elva/DKW] FJ1

    Dave Morgan [Corvette] BP1

    Jim Barron [AC/Bristol] DP1

    Alex Budurin [Ferrari 250TR] DNF

    Hap Sharp [Cooper Monaco/Maserati] DNF

Thank you again Willem for this image, it is proving to be my key research image.

I'm thinking the red arrow points to a new exhaust that Homer must have had made?   In the photo of JC Kilburn we can see individual exhaust stacks pointing up.    I can only imagine the black bit could be an exhaust pipe or expansion chamber.

The hole has been crudely filled in the bodywork today.

Do we know who was the mechanic on the car when Homer had it?

Tim Bishop, a DKW expert in England says that it would most likely line up with the standard exhaust manifold.    So that is easier.

A bit more progress, I found a refurbished DKW engine in Portland Oregon, it should be on it's way here in a few days!

I got the car home on Sunday.  I'm thrilled of course!  Lots of work and parts of course...   Thank you all for your help in researching its history.   I will be restoring it to the #94 Homer Rader livery.  I think it is especially fitting for a Formula Junior to be in the livery of an amateur.

Chuck, Can you get any more dope on the Jim Hall Lotus 18? Did it come direct from the factory? Where did it go?

I have first appearance Sunbeam Sunburn Sports Car Races, Green Valley, Texas,13-14 August 1960, Hall/Sharp? Number?

Update:

Elkhart Lake, 30-31 July 1960

"Jim Hall and crew are in attendance with two Type 61 Masers and the former Jay Chamberlain Lotus Junior."

Rupert,

Those were not the Green Valley Sunbeam Races, but the Green Valley Sunburn Races. It was the very first sports car event organized there, hosted by the Fort Worth Sports Car Club. Jim Hall won Race 2 [15 laps] with his Lotus 18 FJ. In Race 5 [20 laps] he shared the car with Hap Sharp, finishing 3rd overall behind two Corvettes. In the feature [25 laps] Hall ran his Porsche RS-60, winning the race.

Sharp used the Lotus in the feature, finishing 4th overall. Its race number was #177.

From The First Ten Years at Road America:

"On Saturday [July 30, 1960] the new Formula Juniors were sent off on a 100-mile race for the first time in this country. Only 13 machines started. Winner Curt Gonstead [white MBM] literally ran out of gas at the finish line. At 32 seconds was a distant runner-up, Jim Hall in a red Lotus, the only car not to be lapped among the nine finishers."

Since Hall's cars were always white, was the Chamberlain Lotus 18 originally red? No time to change colors? Interesting that this was a USAC sponsored event, not the SCCA.

Here is Jay Chamberlain at Sebring, 26 March 1960. Was this car red? (No, #14 was green)

What is written on the side?

Note Jim Hall ran #8 Elva-DKW at Sebring which was red (great pics):

Jim Hall and team subsequently painted the Lotus 18 white, after Road America, to match the Maseratis?

That is three colours in the first year?

Hall ran Riverside FJ, 15 October 1960: 1st Hansgen, Cooper; 2nd  #4 Hall, Lotus; 3rd #51 Jay Chamberlain, Lotus

Other: #10 Jack W. McCann, Torrance, Lotus

If in fact some 25 Lotus 18s were exported to Chamberlain, he may well have raced various 18s in 1960, including a green and a red one.

I think Chamberlain received a minimum of 7 cars, and a maximum of 12 (best guess).

#52 at Vaca Valley, 9-10 July 1960?

1. Jay Chamberlain, Lotus Fjr, 79.67 mph

Also at May Pomona; Santa Maria 3 July, 1st place

Entered San Luis Obispo, 7 August 1960?

(Also Steve Brent, Los Angeles, Lotus Fjr)

Nassau, Bahamas, 4 December 1960:

https://www.the-fast...J60_WNassau.htm

3rd #95 white Lotus 18, Hap Sharp

(Winner Jim Hall, #66 Cooper)

We know that Jim Hall was in the Lotus at Midland, Texas, Saturday, 17 September 1960.

By Nassau, 4 Dec 1960, he had forsaken it for a Cooper, and Hap Sharp takes over the Lotus.

According to Terry O'Neil's Nassau book, the Lotus 18 that Hap Sharp took to 3rd overall in 1960 was chassis J847. It ran under #95. Could this have been the former Hall 18?
