One of the most famous pictures of the early years of NASCAR racing, is the image of Vittie Cothron who reaches through windshield of his 1936 Ford Coupe to hold open throttle, steer with other hand, and finished third in a race, on 04 June 1950.

I'm unable to find more information on the life and career of Vittie Cothorn (arguably I thought this was his only NASCAR race?). What circuit? more info?

The correct spelling is Corthron.
At least in 2011 he was still alive (when a brother-in-law of his passed away; Source).
