Philippines Grand Prix, Luneta Park, Manila, 25-26 July 1970, 40 laps, "just over two miles in length"

1. Alan Davies, Singapore, Mini Cooper S, 1293 c.c., 1 hr 4 mins 39.5secs, 106.5 kph

2. Albert Poon, Hong Kong, Ford Escort, 1 hr 5 mins 01.1secs

3. Joey Bundalian, Mini Cooper, 37 laps

4. Butch Viola, Mazda, 36 laps

5. Pocholo Ramirez, Toyota Corolla, 36 laps

6. Ronny Blaylock, USA, Mazda, 34 laps

7. Edgar Laurens, Mini Cooper, 33 laps

DNF:

Jimmy Southern, South Africa, Ford Escort, 4 laps, engine

Dante Silverio, Ford Escort, 17 laps, con-rod 

Chito Monserat, Ford Escort TC, 20 laps, transmission

Rad Ocampo, Ford Escort, clutch

 

"Local boy, Chito Monserat, did the fastest lap in

practice with a time of 1 min. 32.8 secs. to earn pole

position. He also set the fastest lap time during the

race, slightly slower at 1 min. 33 secs, or an average

speed of 69.4 m.p.h. a lap being 3.38 kilometers or

approx. 2.11 miles. Top speeds reached on the straight

were in the order of 75 m.p.h."

 

"Also racing was Jimmy Southern, a South African, who won the Portuguese East African Grand Prix (Mozambique) in 1962

but has not raced at all for the last 5 years through pressure of business."

This would have been a big win for the PH Wong team, I would assume...

 

Alan Davies drove a Mini prepared by Geoff Smedley, though I note that in Geoff's book he gives the surname as 'Davis'. But he does describe him as an architect and Googling establishes the probability that 'Davies' is correct.

There is a book "FAST LANE"  Motor Sports in the Philippines, published by the Automobile Association Philippines.

It was published in 2003.
